Travel to Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro Airports
Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International airport (GIG)
Rio de Janeiro - Galeao (GIG) to City Centre
Bus: Line 2145 and Line 2016 go from the airport and the city centre. Main difference is 2145 connects to the other airport (Santos Dumont). The journey can take around between 45 mins and 60 minutes depending on which bus you take.
Bus + Metro: BRT Express TransCarioca line to the Vincente de Carvalho metro station to transfer to the L2 Metro line which stops at Central and Botafogo.
Santos Dumont airport (sdu)
Santos Dumont (SDU) to City Centre

This airport is closer to the city centre so will be much easier to get to the true centre of Rio de Janeiro.
Bus: No direct bus lines from the airport to the city centre. However, if you walk to the station Condomínio do Edifício, bus line 342 goes to Sete de Setembre which is situated close to the centre.
Metro: The other option is a metro but no designated stop from the airport. Cinelandia metro is close by which is served by L1,L4 & L2 lines which run centrally or to Ipanema & Copacabana direction.
Tram: Lines L1 and L3 run from the airport to the Central areas of Rio de Janeiro. If you are travelling to Copacabana, the tram will not take you directly

Travel around Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro - Metro
The metro is the easiest and vast way to travel around Rio. It spreads from the north to the central areas to the beach areas in the south of Copacabana & Ipanema areas. The metro consists of 3 lines named L1, L2 & L4. Public transport passes must be purchased to utilise the metro and other public transport options

City Buses
There's a huge choice of city buses which may be confusing for tourists to navigate. There is also the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) which has 3 designated routes named Trans Oeste, Trans Olimpico and Trans Carioca which you may use to get to Geleao airport

Taxis
Taxis are all over Rio De Janeiro characterised by being bright yellow with dark blue strips down the side. This must always be metered as its not permitted to settle on a set fee.

Best Connected: Centro
Centro is Rio’s bustling and most connected area. As the name suggests, it sits in the centre of Rio De Janeiro with most of the public transport systems situating or passing through. Its traditionally, the business and governmental district but also home to its port and the futuristic Museum of Tomorrow. More historical landmarks include Paço Imperial, a former royal palace, and São Bento Monastery.
Upmarket Choice: Ipanema
You cannot think of Ipanema without thinking of its golden sands and blue waters. The district itself however is home to upmarket hotels, fine-dining restaurants and bars and high-end fashion boutiques with the top names in fashion. It also boasts an incredible promenade and dramatic mountainous backdrop that feels like it stretches for miles.
Up & Coming: Saint Teresa
One word that desribes Saint Teresa is bohemian and it's easy to see why with its ample local artists' studios. The renovated area is growing in popularity drawing visitors to the Parque das Ruinas and numerous historical villas which reside on the hill top looking over the rest of the city.
